On December 21, 2024 the Senate passed the Social Security Fairness Act 76 to 20. The bill now moves to the President for his signature. Millions will be affected. The repeal of WEP and GPO has long been hoped for by many affected by the provisions including educators, police officers, firefighters and local government employees who will now receive increased Social Security benefits, by potentially eliminating the "Windfall Elimination Provision" (WEP) and "Government Pension Offset" (GPO) rules, which currently reduce the Social Security benefits of many public sector workers like teachers (CalSTRS members) who also receive a pension, but it will not affect the CalSTRS retirement benefit itself; only their potential Social Security benefits could increase if the act passes.In order to become law, the bill must now be signed by President Biden.
